Secular Radicals Demand City Stop Praying

Article ThumbnailThis week, the City Council of League City, Texas, officially adopted a public invocation policy drafted by Liberty Institute. Liberty stepped in to help the city after it received a misleading letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), telling city officials that their 50-year tradition of praying before public meetings violated the First Amendment.

“We commend Mayor Paulissen and the City Council of League City for adopting a formal invocation policy,” said Liberty Institute Attorney Mike Berry. “It is important to put into writing what is already being practiced.”

The fight over prayer before legislative bodies has been going on for years. Liberty Institute has helped numerous school districts, cities, counties and states across the country protect the right of individuals to pray publicly without government censorship. Forty years ago, the U.S Supreme Court held constitutional public invocations before legislative bodies in the case of Marsh v. Chambers.  However, despite this ruling,  some lower courts have failed to follow this Supreme Court precedent. , This issue has now made its way back to the U.S. Supreme Court in the case Galloway v. Greece. In early August, Liberty Institute filed a friend-of-the-court brief in this case on behalf of several distinguished Christian theologians.

Prayer before public meetings is a tradition rooted deep in American history. The First Congress opened their meetings in prayer. The Congress that adopted the First Amendment opened their meetings in prayer. The U.S. Congress continues to open in prayer, as do many state legislatures.
